Although this top 25 list was compiled prior to Vongphachanh even taking a practice rep at BYU, it was apparent to all involved that he’d play a big role in this year’s Cougar defense. The 6-foot-3, 235 pound transfer from Utah State played very well for the Aggies and is well-versed in the nuances of BYU’s new defensive system.

Upon arrival at BYU he’s fit in almost seamlessly during practice sessions and is set to become one of the Cougar defense’s primary playmakers this season.

“The glowing remarks from Jay Hill are telling just how good he can be for this defense,” said Ben Criddle, host of Cougar Sports with Ben Criddle on ESPN960. “He’s physically imposing and his extremely long arms allows him to come downhill in this 4-3 defense to get off blocks and make plays at the line of scrimmage. He’s also extremely intelligent and well-prepared.”
