A lot of “ATH” in the BYU Class of 2022: BYU Football Prep Tracker Week 6

In week 6 of prep action several BYU recruits showed they can play just about anywhere they are needed on the field.

Cannon DeVries (WR/FS, Weber) had another big game with 71 receiving yards (and two touchdowns), 73 rushing yards, 101 return yards, and 10 tackles.  Jarinn Kalama (WR/FS, Wasatch) had his most productive game thus far this season with three receptions and a team-leading seven tackles. And Parker Kingston (QB, Roy) did a little bit of everything, going 9-for-14 passing for 110 yards, rushing 16 for 153 yards and three touchdowns, and punting twice for 93 yards.

BYU recruits also won in the trenches.  Kaden Chidester (DL, Richfield) had two sacks, while offensive linemen Peter Falaniko (Pine View), Vae Soifua (Orem), and Talin Togiai (Rigby ID) all helped their teams to blowout wins.

Here is a breakdown for each of the BYU commits:

Class of 2022 Commits

  • Kaden Chidester (@Kaden_Chid, ATH).  Richfield HS (Richfield, Utah, 2-4) defeated North Sanpete 15-14.  Chidester had three tackles, one quarterback hurry, and two sacks. Season totals: Five games; 17 tackles (nine solo), three passes defended, seven quarterback hurries, three sacks, one blocked field goal, one blocked PAT.
  • Cannon DeVries (@CannonDevries, WR/FS). Weber HS (Pleasant View, Utah, 4-2) defeated Clearfield on the road 63-27.  DeVries had four receptions for 71 yards (17.8 avg) and two touchdowns with three carries for 73 yards.  On special teams he had three returns for 101 yards and on defense he had 10 tackles (nine solo), and two passes defended. Season totals: five games, 31 receptions for 418 yards and five touchdowns, nine carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns, 375 return yards, 50 tackles, two passes defended, one tackle for loss, one blocked field goal, and two interceptions.
  • Peter Falaniko (@FalanikoPeter, OL). Pine View HS (St. George, Utah, 5-1) defeated Cedar 62-29.  Falaniko recorded no stats. Season totals: six games, no stats.
  • Braxton Fely (@Braxton_Fely, DL). Timpview HS (Orem, Utah, 4-2) defeated Alta on the road 62-21.  Stats have not yet been recorded. Season totals: through first five games; 30 tackles (29 solo), 14 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries, and 6.5 sacks.
  • Brooks Jones (@Brooks_Jones81, DE/TE). American Leadership Academy (Queen Creek, Arizona, 2-1) defeated Buckeye 66-28.  Jones had three tackles. Season totals: Three games, eight tackles (three solo), two sacks.
  • Jarinn Kalama (@JarinnKalama, ATH). Wasatch HS (Heber City, Utah, 5-1) defeated Maple Mountain 54-16.  Kalama had three receptions for 11 yards, and a team-leading seven tackles (five solo).   Season totals: five games, 19 receptions for 275 yards and two touchdowns, one pass for 55 yards, 13 tackles (five solo).
  • Maika Kaufusi (@KaufusiMaika, S). Alta HS (Sandy, Utah, 3-3) lost to Timpview 62-21.  Kaufusi is still out with an injury and is expected back in the next few weeks. Season totals: one game, four receptions for 238 yards and four touchdowns, four tackles (three solo), and a forced fumble.
  • Parker Kingston (QB). Roy HS (Ogden, Utah, 3-2) defeated Kearns 40-35. Kingston was 9-for-14 passing for 110 yards, and had 16 carries for 153 yards and three touchdowns.  He also had two punts for 93 yards. Season totals: Six games, 28-of-53 passing for 446 yards and five touchdowns (zero interceptions), 55 carries for 509 yards and eight touchdowns, two kickoff returns for 129 yards and one touchdown, 1 punt return for 10 yards, five tackles (four solo), one pass defended, two punts for 93 yards (46.5 avg).
  • Liutai Kinikini (LB). West HS (Salt Lake City, Utah, 4-1) defeated Hunter 30-14. Kinikini had two solo tackles and a pass defended. Season totals: five games, 16 tackles (eight solo), two passes defended.
  • Noah Moeaki (@noah_moeaki, TE/OLB). American Fork HS (American Fork, Utah, 4-1) suffered their first defeat of the season, 51-22 to nationally ranked Corner Canyon. Stats not yet recorded. Season totals: through first four games, 14 receptions for 227 yards and five touchdowns, 12 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack.
  • Trevin Ostler (@OstlerTrevin, ATH). Bountiful HS (Bountiful, Utah, 3-2) defeated Bonneville 20-14. Stats not yet recorded. Season totals: through first three games, eight tackles (three solo), two tackles for loss, one sack.
  • Cooper Ross (@CooperJRoss, TE). Heritage Academy (Mesa, Arizona, 2-0) defeated Western SciTech 62-0  Stats not yet recorded. Season totals: one game, five receptions for 107 yards, two touchdowns, two tackles, one sack, one 15-yard fumble recovery for touchdown.
  • Vae Soifua (@vae_soifua, OL). Orem HS (Orem, Utah, 4-2) defeated Jordan 42-7. Soifua had one tackle, one sack, and one forced fumble. Season totals: six games, two tackles (two solo), one sack, one forced fumble.
  • Talin Togiai (@TogiaiTalin, OT/DT). Rigby HS (Rigby, ID, 4-0) defeated Hillcrest 35-0. Rigby is the no. 1 ranked team in Idaho largely thanks to the work being done in the trenches.  No stats. Season totals: four games, no stats.
  • Micah Wilson (@Micah_Wilson11, LB). Corner Canyon HS (Draper, Utah, 6-0) defeated American Fork 51-22 on the road. Wilson had three tackles (one solo) and two quarterback hurries.  Corner Canyon is currently ranked no. 16 nationally by Max Preps. Season totals: five games, 29 tackles (16 solo), three tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries, one sack, and one interception for 27 yards and a touchdown.

Class of 2024 Commits

  • Easton Baker (@BakerEaston, LB). Stansbury HS (Tooele, Utah, 4-2) defeated previously undefeated rival Tooele 29-14. Baker had five tackles and a sack. Season totals: five games, 45 tackles, five sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovered for a 45 yard touchdown.  Three carries on offense for 10 yards, and one reception for 11 yards.
