The Bullpen – April 15, 2015 Edition

As the Major League Baseball is a week and a half old and here are some games to keep an eye on today:

The Kansas City Royals will look to start the season 8-0 tonight at 6:10 as they take on Minnesota Twins (1-6) at Target Field in Minneapolis.  The Royals continue to impress after making it to the World Series last season.  They are being led by Kendrys Morales who is hitting .414 (12-29) on the season.  Salvador Perez has 3 homeruns and 9 RBI through 7 games.  The pitching staff is solid once again as they have a team ERA of 2.57.  Edinson Volquez (1-0, 1.1 ERA) will be making his second start of the season tonight against Kyle Gibson (0-1, 14.73 ERA) of the Twins.

Despite the Royals hot start, the Detroit Tigers are keeping pace as they are 7-1 on the season just a half game back.  The Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates (3-5) square off tonight at 5:05 in Pittsburgh.  The Pirates hand the Tigers their only loss of the season on Monday 5-4.  SS Jose Iglesias his hitting .480 (12-25) on the season for the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera (16-34) is hitting .471.  The Tigers have the offense to keep pace with any team and their pitching staff is impressive as they have a team ERA of 2.15.  Expect the Tigers and Royals to stay atop the American League Central this season.

In the National League the Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves are both 6-2 and leading their respective divisions.  The Colorado Rockies will look to sweep the World Series champion San Francisco Giants (3-6) tonight in San Francisco after taking the first two games 2-0 and 4-1. 2B DJ LeMahieu is on fore as he is hitting .516 (16-31) so far this season.  Corey Dickerson is hitting .406 with 2 homeruns and 10 RBI.  There pitching staff is also solid with a team ERA of 2.47.  First pitch for the Giants and Rockies tonight is at 8:15.

The Atlanta Braves are taking on the Miami Marlins (2-6) this morning in Atlanta.  The Braves and Marlins split the first two games of the series.  The Braves are finding their success through pitching this season as their offense is only hitting .252 as a team.  They will need to pick up their play offensively this season if they want to be a contender this season.

It is great having baseball back.  This is a great time of year.  The season is young, there is still a lot that can happen.  Every team still has a chance.  You never know what can happen through a 162 game schedule.
