BYU defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki talks defensive scheme

New BYU defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki joined Cougar Sports to discuss his new job running the Cougars defense.

On Tuesday, BYU officially introduced its coaching staff and we were able to have new defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki joined Cougar Sports to discuss his move from Oregon State to BYU.

One of the biggest question is what style of defense that Tuiaki will be bringing to Provo, and he plans to fit the scheme with the type of players are on the roster. Expect the defense to have a lot of variables to this side of the ball.

“Good players make you look like smart coaches. If we recruit kids that are really good players we can simplify our scheme,” Tuiaki said. “To me, it’s more important to do what’s best for the kids. I think we’ll dabble a bit in the 3-4 and the 4-3.”

As for how the defensive back position will look, Tuiaki has experience in multiple sets.

“I come from a bit of a man coverage background but did run both man and zone at OSU”

Tuiaki is not from BYU but he is fully aware of the defenses that preceded him under now former head coach Bronco Mendenhall, and he wants to continue having a great defense with BYU. Also, moving on to a new job was eased by joining a familiar face in Kalani Sitake as the two were on that same staff at Oregon State.

Here is the full interview.
