Provo, UT –

South Field would be sold out for its fourth straight home match of the 2023 season. 5,209 were in in attendance.

There was a lot at stake between No. 7 BYU women’s soccer (10-1-3, 3-0-3 Big 12) and No. 7 Texas Tech.

No. 7 Texas Tech (11-0-3, 3-0-1 Big 12) has been undefeated in Big 12 play dating back to September 21st, 2022 against fellow Big 12 foe Texas and had four straight games with multiple goals.

BYU on the other hand, entered into Thursday’s match 3-0 vs. ranked opponents this season, looking to extend that to 4-0.

With BYU looking for their first win on South field, they would ultimately have to wait again as they would draw 2-2 against the Red Raiders on Thursday night.

Jaime Sheppard scored her first goal of the 2023 season to give BYU 1-0 in the 18th minute off a set piece from Brecken Mozingo. Mozingo would take the corner kick as it would find Sheppard at the back post to give the Cougars the lead.

Texas Tech tied the game right before halftime in the 39th minute off a shot by Sam Courtwright. Courtright took the shot inside BYU’s 18-yard box and would deflect on Jaime Sheppard, who was trying to block the shot.

Alex Kerr would give The Red Raiders the lead in the second half in the 61st minute. The Red Raiders would celebrate in March Madness fashion chanting following Kerr’s goal.

BYU put that chanting to sleep just two minutes later as Ellie Walbruch would find the equaliser in the 63rd minute off cross from Olivia Smith-Griffits.

Ellie Walbruch would start the second half. “Ellie is very good at holding the ball. The first half our attack forwards struggled to hold the ball…. Jennfier Rockwood said regarding Walbruch starting the second half in Thursday night’s match against the Red Raiders. Against good attack teams we can’t have that. Ellie is proven to hold the ball pretty well with her back to the goal and at her feet.”

BYU would become the first team in the Big 12 conference to score two goals against the Red Raiders in the 2023 season.

BYU’s Erin Bailey had a chance late to give BYU the lead again, but Texas Tech goalkeeper Madison White made a great read on the ball to stay in net and make the save.

BYU currently sits in 5th in the Big 12 standings, and are five points behind Texas Tech (who is in first). BYU return to action Monday night October 9th 2023 as they take on Kansas State at South Field in Provo, UT. Kick-off is scheduled for 5pm MDT.
