2017 West Coast Conference tournament: BYU vs. St. Mary’s for the third time

BYU is in the semifinals of the WCC tournament against St. Mary’s.

BYU is taking on St. Mary’s in the quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference tournament in the semifinal round. The Cougars made it this far after defeating Loyola Marymount on Saturday,89-81, while St. Mary’s easily took care of Portland 81-58.

BYU has faced St. Mary’s two times this year and the Cougars are 0-2, both by double-digits, and the last time they beat the Gaels was last season on Feb. 4. This time around the Gael are ranked 19th in the AP poll and 18th in the USA TODAY poll.

Not that this is surprising but St. Mary’s is the favorite with the oddsmakers have the Gaels as a seven-point favorite over the Cougars.

“They are good,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said of St. Mary’s. “They have been good all year long. This group of guys they have been together for a couple of years. Hopefully our young guys can give it a whirl, see what happens.”

KemPom gives BYU a 20 percent chance to pull off the upset over the Gaels; while, TeamRankings.com are a little more optimistic of winning by being given just over 25 percent of advancing to the finals.
