College football prognosticator Phil Steele was a featured guest on Cougar Sports with Ben Criddle last week. While on the show, Steele gave his take on who he thinks the starting quarterback would be heading into the fall.

“I ended up going with the true freshman Jacob Conover,” Steele said. “He’s not really a true freshman, he was there all of last year and competed against the scout team… If you have three quarterbacks that are dead even heading into the fall, I usually go with the youngest and most talented one.”

Steele, who has been one of the most credible and accurate sources in college football, stated that he has very lofty expectations for Conover. “I think Jacob Conover is a rare type of talent at BYU, I expect him to leave BYU as one of the best ever.”

Conover was the 17th ranked quarterback coming out of high school according to Steele. He received scholarship offers from Alabama, Ole Miss, Arizona and Arizona State but decided to go to Provo to play for Kalani Sitake.

Steele has not been the only one on the Conover hype train, Dave McCann of BYU TV has been very vocal in his support of the freshman too. “I think Phil Steele is onto something with Conover, “ McCann said on ESPN 960. “He’s a big time talent with a lot of potential, in a quarterback race that is wide open.”
