Maika Kaufusi puts up monster numbers as the prep Season opens: BYU Football Prep Tracker Week 1

As the prep season kicked off this weekend a number of 2022 BYU football commits were in action.  The performance of the week came from Maika Kaufusi who had four receptions for 238 yards and four touchdowns in Alta’s road opener. He touched the ball one other time—to cause a fumble–as he also got in the action on defense.  He had four tackles.

Other impressive outings came from Cannon DeVries (two receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown), Jarinn Kalama (seven receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown), and Noah Moeaki (one touchdown reception).  Below are the summaries for each of the 2022 BYU football commits.

Class of 2022 Commits

  • Kaden Chidester (@Kaden_Chid, ATH).  Richfield HS (Richfield, Utah, 0-1) lost their opener at Hurricane 26-28.  Chidester lined up at offensive tackle, nose guard, and defensive tackle in the loss and recorded no stats.
  • Cannon DeVries (@CannonDevries, WR/FS). Weber HS (Pleasant View, Utah, 0-1) was defeated at Bingham 35-55 in Week 1.  DeVries had two receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown as well as a six yard punt return.  On defense he had seven total tackles (three solo) and one tackle for loss.
  • Peter Falaniko (@FalanikoPeter, LG). Pine View HS (St. George, Utah) defeated Salem Hills Friday night on the road, 38-27.  Falaniko played at left guard, opening holes for BYU targets, the Mckenzie brothers (sons of BYU great Brian McKenzie).  The brothers had 148 receiving yards between them, while Dominique also had 117 yards in kickoff returns as well as two tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception.
  • Braxton Fely (@Braxton_Fely, DL). Timpview HS (Orem, Utah) lost their road opener to Lone Peak 44-31 Friday night.  Fely played on the defensive tackle and defensive end.  No stats have yet been reported.
  • Brooks Jones (@Brooks_Jones81, DE/TE). American Leadership Academy (Queen Creek, Arizona).  Season starts in two weeks.
  • Jarinn Kalama (@JarinnKalama, ATH). Wasatch HS (Heber City, Utah, 1-0) defeated Park City in their road opener 21-15.  Kalama had seven receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown.
  • Maika Kaufusi (@KaufusiMaika, S). Alta HS (Sandy, Utah) defeated Layton 34-27 in their road opener.  Kaufusi had four receptions for a whopping 238 total yards and four touchdowns.  He also recorded four tackles (three solo), and a forced fumble.
  • Liutai Kinikini (WR/LB). West HS (Salt Lake City, Utah) defeated Clearfiled 24-7 in their home opener. No stats have yet been reported.
  • Noah Moeaki (@noah_moeaki, LB). American Fork HS (American Fork, Utah, 1-0) defeated Granger 60-0 in their road opener. Moeaki had one touchdown reception.
  • Trevin Ostler (@OstlerTrevin, ATH). Bountiful HS (Bountiful, Utah). Game vs. Highland was cancelled due to COVID concerns.  Will play Farmington next Friday.
  • Cooper Ross (@CooperJRoss, TE). Heritage Academy (Mesa, Arizona).  Season doesn’t start for another month.
  • Vae Soifua (@vae_soifua, OL). Orem HS (Orem, Utah, 1-0) defeated East high 27-14 on the road Friday night. No stats have yet been reported.
  • Micah Wilson (@Micah_Wilson11, LB). Corner Canyon HS (Draper, Utah, 1-0) destroyed Farmington on the road for their opener 72-21.  No reported stats for Wilson, however, Micah’s younger brother Isaac—a 2024 BYU target—played in the second half and completed all six of his passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Corner Canyon is currently ranked no. 24 nationally by Max Preps.
