News and Notes:

Criddle: “Haws broke a Suns record by doing 28 3/4 lengths of the court in 3 minutes.”

Jorgensen: “He brings his lunch pail everyday.”

How We See It:

Twestion: Is BYU in midseason form at the beginning of the season because of their maturity?

Jorgensen: “Initially I think no, but as I look at their past I’m going to have to say yes, they have a tradition of beating very good football teams in the first couple games of the year.”

Criddle: “I would say that is not true during the Bronco Mendenhall era. Look at how they’ve started from 2005-2007: 1-2, 1-2, and 1-2.”

Criddle: “In 2010, 1-2, no muy bien.”

Jorgensen: “Ugh, Jaime Hill.”

Criddle: “I’m seeing a pattern here, perhaps during the LaVell Edwards era you did start a little bit hotter?”

Jorgensen: “Traditionally, BYU has played tougher teams in the beginning of their season.”

4:30 Segment:

Criddle: “I don’t think that Bronco Mendenhall will go down as revered as LaVell because LaVell won a national championship obviously.”

Criddle: “Bronco Mendenhall in 10 years has started the first three games 16-14, LaVell in his last 10 years started 15-15.”

Jorgensen: “Perception around the country was that BYU was a mid-major team.”

Jorgensen: “Even though they used to be seen as that, they didn’t play like it.”

Jorgensen: “If you have a new HC or a new QB, BYU is going to come in and beat you.”

Criddle: “I wish I had a national show, no one would listen to me, but I would have a national audience.”

Criddle: “One thing that people don’t realize is that the only way you get better at a sport is by playing it. Not walking around for 2 years preaching the gospel.”

Jorgensen: “Exactly, walking around Mexico for two years, you’ll gain so much muscle mass.”

Cougar Insider Report:

Jorgensen: “When I played I spent a lot of money on food, and it was junk food. I would splurge on Tony’s Pizzas and Velveeta Shells and Cheese.”

Criddle: “BYU will renegotiate their TV contract with ESPN in a few years and the question is how will they increase their marketability?”

Criddle: “Jamaal Williams Mom has done a lot for increasing BYU’s exposure by how she reps the team in her community.”

Mauss: “To get closer to what Ben is saying, ESPN needs a second entity to come in and drive up the contract.”

Nate Meikle Interview:

Meikle: “In terms of evolutionary standards, we’re not much smarter than apes. The first machine that we create that is smarter than us, that will be the last invention humans ever make.”

Criddle: “Guys like Jan Jorgensen will be out there killing each other for AI’s entertainment.”

Meikle: “LeBron James is the most perfect athlete ever. You can’t build anything better than that.”

Meikle: “For 2014, Jordan Leslie was a stud, Fred Warner was a stud, Tejan Koroma was a stud.”

Meikle: “In 2013, the only guy who you would stay is a stud is Dre Wesley.”

Meikle: “2014 BYU was very fortunate to get Leslie and Kurtz as transfers.”

Meikle: “Time will tell, but we will see with the 2015 class.”

Meikle: “What I think is fascinating was 2004. BYU finishes 5-7 but they had Austin Collie and Todd Watkins and a bevy of NFL talent.”

Meikle: “Maybe the talent has dropped in terms of NFL draft picks, but they’re still winning a lot of games without having those NFL guys.”

Jorgensen: “Was there a year that you tried out for RB? Was that the same year that you were threatened to be murdered?”

Meikle: “Yeah, to some people…. reps are pretty important.”

Criddle: “We were breaking down the 2012 team and one thing that really lacked was the ST. They had such a talented defense yet there were 3 games that they lost by a combined total of 7 points.”

Meikle: “I think there are a lot of fans that don’t appreciate how consistent Bronco is.”

Meikle: “I think that Anae’s stats speak for themselves, it is simple, but there is excellence that comes from the simplicity.”

Criddle: “I think the two corners will be Hannemann and Preator.”

Criddle: “As for safety, I think that it will be Nacua and Takenaka/Unga.”

Gerald Bourguet Interview:

Bourguet: “The Suns usually bring guys who aren’t very notable, mostly 2nd round prospects early on.”

Bourguet: “I was very impressed with how well spoken Haws was and he was such a great interview. I was cheering for him towards the end.”

Bourguet: “He got some buzz for breaking that record.”

Bourguet: “They only let the media in for the last 15-20 minutes but he looked good and made a fair amount of the shots he took.”

Bourguet: “It’s funny that for 24 he is considered old. He knew that it’s against him but he’s also optimistic.”

Bourguet: “He said that he did get some strength off the court mentally because of the two years he spent on his mission.”

Bourguet: “Jimmer Freddette was one of my favorite college players with the way he could shoot, going to the Kings didn’t help him at all but the same could be said about any number of prospects.”

6:00 Segment:

Jorgensen: “When I was a teacher, I was able to avoid spelling mistakes by making power points but whenever I had to write on the board my students would make fun of me.”

Jorgensen: “Did you see the guy who won the spelling bee? He was wearing a fresh pair of J’s, I bet he has to fight off those 13 year old girls.”

Criddle: “Taysom had almost as many yards rushing that Steve Young had in one season in two games in 2012.”

Jorgensen: “The way that football is played today is so much different than how it used to be. It’s hard to argue stats.”

Jorgensen: “I can’t argue that Steve wasn’t the best to ever play at BYU. He would run to avoid pressure because he wasn’t designed to run the football.”

Criddle: “Taysom is just about 2,300 yards away from passing Steve Young for total yards.”

Criddle: “I think you have to give it to Taysom Hill, he is a bigger, faster, stronger athlete.”

Jorgensen: “Taysom is doing this in what is basically an xbox offense.”

Criddle: “I would gladly take a decrease in completion percentage over 5 more interceptions.”

Criddle: “If you look at the numbers, is Steve that much better of a passer than Taysom as Taysom is better as a runner than Steve?”

Criddle: “For BYU fans, I think this will be a LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan type of controversy after this season.”

Criddle: “I have a confession, I do have a grille.”

Criddle: “My Dad is a dentist and gets gold at a discount to fill teeth.”
