BYU announced a huge game to its upcoming schedule by adding Oregon to its football schedule. The game is a few years down the road and will be one-and-down game at Autzen Stadium on Sept. 10, 2022. This is another example of BYU being able to add a Power Five program and while there is no return trip to LaVell Edwards Stadium, getting a team that has been the class of the Pac-12, appeared in a BCS title game and also in last year’s College Football Playoff title game.

These two teams met in the 2006 Holiday Bowl and BYU came away with a 38-8 victory over the Ducks, and the last time these two team played at Autzen was all the back in 1990. BYU who was the superior team at the time as the Cougars were ranked No. 4 but Oregon came away with an upset, winning 32-16.

Building relationships is very important in scheduling and BYU has that with most of the Pac-12, so seeing a one-off game in that conference is not all that concerning because it is possible that down the road that these two teams will meet up again on the gridiron.

“This matchup fits our scheduling philosophy within the current landscape, which means facing top competition along with our Pac-12 opponents,” Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said of this contest.

BYU athletics director Tom Holmoe is obviously excited to be playing Oregon.

“It’s a great opportunity to play an outstanding football team from the Pac 12,” said Holmoe. “Oregon had an opening in its 2022 schedule and the circumstance was right for BYU. We hope to develop a long-term relationship with Oregon.”

This is BYU’s fourth game for the 2022 season and their third on the road. The other games are against South Florida at home on Sept. 23, and the other two road games in addition to Oregon are at Boise State on Oct. 8 and then also at Stanford late in the year on Nov. 26.
